A prolific artist of the first half of the 20th century, Augustin Lesage is the author of an exceptional body of work that draws its sources from spiritualism, as well as from spiritualist, religious and historical literature. A miner by profession, Lesage discovered that he had the soul of a painter.

One day in 1911 or 1912, Lesage had a revelation: a voice appeared and announced a surprising destiny. Lesage declared: "I was in the mine, in a very remote gallery, I was working alone in a small tube of fifty centimeters ... Suddenly, I hear voices that speak to me. I looked around, I couldn't even turn around in that place, I was alone. See my amazement! I was afraid, my hair stood up on my head... I hear: Do not be afraid, we are near you, one day you will be a painter..." (Augustin Lesage quoted in the Petit Journal de l'exposition, " Augustin Lesage ", Musée d'Arras et Musée de Béthune, 15 October 1988 - 15 January 1989, p. 3).
